A Letter to My Son — For the Man You're Becoming

Letters to sons tend to carry a different weight than conversations with them do. There's a cultural script most boys grow up inside that makes emotional talk hard, and that script follows them into adulthood, and it means a lot of what a parent wants their son to hear doesn't get said directly. Parents of sons know this. The things that matter most often come out slanted — in a pat on the shoulder, in the way you show up at the game, in the way you fix the car together. The letter is the one place you get to say them straight.

You sit down tonight and you write, in your real voice, what you want your son to know. Not advice. Not a speech. The specific, honest thing you've been meaning to tell him. What you admire about the man he's becoming. What you remember about him as a kid that you hope he doesn't lose. What you've learned about fatherhood, or life, that you want to pass along. What he meant to you in the year he didn't know you were paying attention.

Then we hold the letter. On a future date you choose — his next birthday, his 18th, his wedding day, the day his first child is born — it arrives in the mail in your handwriting. He reads it. And he receives something sons rarely receive: a direct, unguarded statement from their parent, permanent and tangible, delivered on a day he'll always remember. He puts it in a drawer. He comes back to it. Years later, he reads it with his own kids sitting beside him. That's a letter that travels all the way through a life.
